Simulation of sticky cohesive material
Handling sticky or cohesive materials is a common industrial challenge. At Vastec Engineering, we use DEM simulations with the cohesion models to study how different cohesion levels affect particle behavior. This video compares dry and cohesive materials, showing how stickiness changes flow. These insights help optimize processes in mining and other industries dealing with ores, grains, and powders.

Simulation of slurry feed using CFD
At Vastec, we optimized a slurry distribution tank design using CFD with the VOF method, simulating the complex three-phase flow of slurry, water, and air. We focused on improving flow dynamics, wear resistance, and even distribution to four classifiers. The insights from these simulations guide better designs, showing how Vastec uses advanced techniques to enhance client processes.

Simulation of feeder from silo - Particle size segregation
This simulation shows the particle sizes of the rocks and illustrates how material can be segregated with the smaller rocks in the bottom of the belt and larger rocks end up on the top. This is in many cases overlooked, and may affect the processes or transfer points further down in the process.
Also, when measuring the PSD (particle size distribution) via 3D scanning techniques, the reading might become incorrect if segregation occurs since we can only measure the top layer

Redesign and evaluation of pebble crusher feed
Vastec Engineering AB helped redesign a mining company’s pebble crusher feed system. The original setup caused size segregation and stress on components. Maintenance was hard due to conveyor position and height limits. Using DEM simulations, we optimized the system. The new design ensures better particle distribution and improved efficiency.

DEM Simulation of full scale AG-mill
Simulation of a full scale AG mill to evaluate charge behavior at different wear levels of the liner as well as mill speeds.
Simulation of discharge flow. Evaluation of mill discharge designs. Simulations performed for dry conditions.

Simulation of rope shovel bucket filling dynamics with DEM-FEM
This was a research project where rope shovel in Bolidens Aitik open pit copper mine was studied. DEM-FEM models were calibrated and used for full scale applications on rope shovel bucket filling.

Redesign of dust hood collector
Vastec created a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation of a board profiler machine. The goal was to propose and simulate new designs for the dust collection hood. A single phase CFD model was created and passive scalars transport were used to track dust particles.
